Multi-objective Optimization of a Biodiesel Based Hybrid Renewable Energy System Using Different Battery Storage Types
This research main contribution is modeling and multi-objective optimization of an off-grid
hybrid renewable energy system based on biodiesel generator and battery storage for supplying
the demand load for remote areas. Many investigations are carried on hybrid power systems
based on wind and solar sources, but the investigation on the hybrid wind/photovoltaic/biodiesel
system by different types of storage systems is rarely found. Also considering the different types
of storage systems is not included in previous studies. In this study, the optimal configuration of
a hybrid energy system including biodiesel generator, wind turbine, and photovoltaic panel by
applying different type of battery storage for a remote area in Iran is investigated. The objective
of the optimum design is to minimize cost and pollutions and maximize the reliability,
manifested as Loss of power supply probability of the hybrid system. For this cause, modeling,
optimization and techno-economic analyses carried out and for a better understanding and
finding out the effects of the variables, sensitivity analyses on different types of batteries,
dispatch type, load, components prices, interest rate and fuel prices has been done. The results
show that the biodiesel/photovoltaic/battery system is the optimum choice compared to four
other systems such as common diesel generator system. Also using lithium iron phosphate
battery among other popular batteries ends up to more reliability and cheaper system. The
proposed hybrid system has less fuel consumption, 31.71% cheaper net present cost, less
levelized cost of energy, 98.35% reduction of pollutions, renewable penetration of over 90% and
also high reliability due to using biodiesel generator and battery storage as backup systems
compared to other systems and also common diesel generator systems.
